Alma Campuzano
Choreographer and Instructor
Born in Mexico, Alma began studying dance at age five. Upon arriving in the U.S. she couldn't find a dance academy where she could explore her Latin American identity, so she began taking classes privately with her sister, Selene Stafford. She began competing at 15 and continued studying with choreographers and teachers including Nelson Reyes (former principal dancer of the Havana Ballet) and Eric Carpio (choreographer of Televisa Mexico). Alma worked as a teacher in the Dancing for Diversity program, a partnership between the Latin American Women Association and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and went on to travel to Mexico City to study under Renato Levi of the Ballet Folklorico de Amalia Hernandez. She has now been a professional dancer for more than a decade and is an energetic dancer and instructor for El Alma de la Luna. She joined NCBAP in 2021 and began dancing samba professionally in 2022. She also choreographs multiple NCBAP pieces and teaches classes at the Project Space. While she's not dancing or teaching, Alma is spending time with her two sons, husband, siblings, and extended family.
